The town of St. George is honored to have presented Ken Jacobson with St. George’s Boston Post Cane. The Boston Post Cane is an ebony cane that is passed down to the oldest resident in town, a tradition that began in 1909. Ken was born on November 24, 1925 and has lived in St. George his entire life. Over a cup of coffee at his kitchen table he recalled the years attending the Long Cove schoolhouse as some of the best years of his life. At the age of 17, he went to work at Bath Iron Works, a commute he made sitting on a box in the back of car with eight other young shipbuilders. At the age of 18, he joined the Army to serve in World War II and was stationed in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. When he returned home, he worked as a police officer and in the prison system.

Tomorrow is May 1st. Tomorrow we begin distribution of the new pine tree plate. It's been over 20 years since Maine has done a complete new plate rollout. Deputy Clerk Patty was here for that, and back then everything was recorded on paper! This time of course we're using a computer, and the computer software for this rollout will have a whole new module. That module won't get any real testing until tomorrow! Please bear with us; it's a new system, new information, a new protocol, it's all new. There will be some growing pains. Bring an extra dose of patience when you come to reregister your car.

Other things to bring with you? Your OLD registration. In order to prevent mistakes, you MUST bring your old registration with you. You will also need to bring your insurance card, and accurate mileage. If you have a vanity plate, and you reserved the plate, you should bring the physical plate and the the letter you received with you.

A recent series Apple watch was found on Horse Point Road near the pound. If you lost an Apple watch, call the town office and identify the style of watch you lost. (The watch in the photo is stock, and not the watch in question.)

Let's say the Island Institute Fellow lets it slip she's NEVER had a Twinkie! What do you do? That's right, you have a snack cake smorgasbord at the staff meeting. Erin reports "It's not as bad as I thought; it's kinda good."

Earlier this month we announced that our Assessors' Agent would be visiting about 375 properties over the next two months. That hasn't changed. What HAS changed is the day. Instead of working here in St. George on Wednesdays, she's moved her workday to Thursdays. If you have filed for a building permit in the last 24 months it is quite likely she will be stopping by for an inspection some Thursday.

The town office is closed today for Patriot's Day. Patriot's Day remembers the battles of Lexington and Concord--the first battles of the American Revolution. Since the state of Maine was still part of Massachusetts then, the state still honors those Massachusetts battles. The photo in this post shows what's commonly called the "Betsy Ross flag," and another historic Massachusetts flag, the "Taunton flag." See the links bellow if you're interested in the history of the day and the flags. We received this message from Maine Water, and wanted to pass it along to residents. "This is an Important Message from the Maine Water Company" On behalf of the Tenants Harbor Water District, Maine Water will be completing water main flushing in your area on Monday 04-21-2025 and Tuesday 04-22-2025. During and immediately after this work, you may notice cloudy or discolored water as flushing clears any sediment or build up in the water mains. If you notice cloudy water, please wait until flushing work has completed and run the COLD water from your bathtub tap or any other tap in your home for a couple minutes. The water should clear. Thank you for your patience while we complete this regular and important maintenance on your water system.

Irene Ames. She's our Finance Director, Tax Collector, and General Assistance Administrator. And becuase she's our GA lady, we're not supposed to use her photo online (for security reasons). So instead, we show you... Her raspberry pie! Yes, we're thankful she runs payroll every week. Yes, she's the lady who makes sure the budgets stay in check. But really, what we love the most, is her ability to churn out pie after delicious rasperry pie. Thanks for all you do, Irene, and thanks for the delicious treats! (Incidentally, if anyone knows a thing or two about treats, it's Irene. How a lady can eat thirteen times a day and still stay a size 2 is beyond us!)

Big thanks to the Bald Eagles House Crew from the St. George School. They had the task to "beautify" St. George, so they came to the town office and picked up the grounds. Once they were done with that they spent some time leaving us beautiful chalk drawings in the parking lot. Thank you Bald Eagles!

The Parks an Recreation Department is more than youth sports. Senior lunch happens once a month, and local seniors get together for camaraderie and (this month at least!) and American chop suey. The seniors also participate in other activities, like sunset boat cruises and bus trips. There's always room, so you're welcome to join in the fun.
