It's Tuesday. And yes, the transfer station is open.

Spring is prime composting season, and the St. George Transfer Station runs a very successful composting program. In fact, the town can sell all the compost that is produced! That finished compost helps offset the costs of running the Transfer Station—and it all starts with something simple: your food scraps. Next time you drop off your trash, take an extra moment to place your food scraps in the compost bin conveniently located right beside it.

Accepted compost items include:
• Fruit and vegetable scraps
• Coffee grounds
• Grass clippings
• Leaves and yard debris
Items not accepted include meats, oils, dairy products, fish, or shellfish shells. For a full list of compostable materials, visit the compost information page on the town website: https://www.stgeorgemaine.com/page/composting-starts-at-home

It's Tuesday, and yes, the Transfer Station is open.

Ever wonder what actually happens to the cans you toss into the recycling bin at the Transfer Station? They don’t just sit there! Once collected, they’re compressed tightly into large bales and shipped off to be recycled and sold. This stack of approximately 7.5 tons of cans currently at the transfer station is valued at $1,500, helping offset the disposal cost of our trash when sold. St. George has long been at the forefront of recycling, and every can you drop in the bin helps keep valuable materials out of the landfill.

While recycling markets have changed over the years and the revenue from cans isn’t quite what it used to be, they still generate income for the town and help offset waste disposal costs. Every little bit counts—and it starts with residents doing their part.

Road Cleanup Announcement

The due date for property taxes was March 31st. In a couple of weeks we'll be mailing a "30 day notification" to remind you, and to alert you you're in danger of having a lien placed on your property. That letter, with it's postage and added services, is around $10. Those fees get added to your account. And, if you have more than one address on file (like a mortgage holder, or multiple family members on the account), each one of those gets a letter too; that means the $10 for each of THOSE letters gets added to your account as well. We would prefer not to go through this process, and would prefer to to add extra charges to your account. So please, if you have outstanding taxes, could you please get them paid?

It's Tuesday. Yes, the transfer station is open.

Speaking of the transfer station, did you know about the excellent paint recycling we have? If you have liquid paint* in the container, with the label still on it, you can recycle it? Just place it in the drop off area. There's no extra charge; the disposal fees are paid at the time of purchase.

*What do we mean by "liquid paint"? That means paint that isn't all dried up, or paint that's been mixed with woodchips or sawdust. Those were old paint disposal techniques, and that paint can't be recycled. If it's all hard or mixed with sawdust it goes right into the demolition hopper.
