Ash Tree

In anticipation the inevitable arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) on the St. George peninsula we are hoping to protect an amazing stand of white ash along the Fort Point Trail. The Maine Forest Service (MFS) recommends girdling a young ash (known as a trap tree) and monitoring for signs of EAB. Girdling involves striping a portion of the tree’s bark which stresses the tree. The EAB can pick up these stress signals and is drawn to the tree, thus telling us that EAB’s have arrived. This is an initial step in the Conservation Commission’s effort to protect the ash trees in a cost-effective manner. We invite you to join the Conservation Commission on July 2, at 8:00am, as we gridle two trees near the Fort Point Trail.
