Trails & Preserves

Introduction

The Conservation Commission has created and continues to create trails throughout the town in collaboration with George's River Land Trust (GRLT) and Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT).  Please check back here often for trail status updates and new trail activity.

Our trails and preserves abut private property.  Please be very respectful of these neighbors while visiting our trails.  If the parking lot is full, go to another tail, do not park in the road or on private property.

Tips for protecting the trails in town during Mud Season

Start by avoiding the impulse to walk around muddy areas to keep feet dry. Walking on the edges of trails beats down the vegetation, widens the trail and causes damage to both the trail and surrounding environment. Trails that are over saturated are vulnerable to long term damage from soil compaction and erosion with every footstep, making it harder for vegetation to grow and leaving rocks and roots exposed.

Trails that are better for mud season:

  • Meadow Brook
  • Clark island
  • West side of Town Forest to Jones Brook

Trails to avoid during mud season:

  • Fort Point
  • East Side of Town Forest
  • Les Hyde (School)
  • Bamford

Jones Brook Trail

The Jones Brook trail had been closed early in 2023 due to logging operations on private land that rendered a significant portion of the trail impassable and too hazardous to hike through.  Georges River Land Trust and the Conservation Commission have been working on trail re-routing plans.  Presently the Jones Brook trail can be accessed via the Town Forest trailhead.  This is now an out-and-back spur.  The Jones Brook trail from the Rte 131 trailhead has been undergoing a re-route which will now take the trail through the Historical Society property to form an out-and-back lolly-pop loop.  This is expected to be completed in the spring.
